I'm not saying producers defer to the number of Twitter followers to make AS decisions. What I'm saying is that player popularity (both good and bad) is better measured by looking at quantitative data that more accurately reflects player popularity. These numbers include TV ratings, America's vote, and other quantitative measures, like Twitter followers. The situation is analogous to RateMyProfessor.com. Ratings on RateMyProfessor are not a good measure of teaching effectiveness or popularity, because most students only visit the site when they passionately love or hate a teacher. Standard teaching evaluations are a better reflection of actual teaching effectiveness and popularity, because, unlike RateMyProfessor.com, they don't rely on polarized data (i.e., people who passionately love or hate). Similarly, a qualitative assessment of BB forum chatter obscures the numbers that, at the end of the day, truly matter: ratings, votes, followers, etc. It doesn't matter if people tune in because they love or hate a character; casting and production only care that they tune in. Make sense?

I also don't think it's rare that BB casts two gays in a single season, especially if you look at seasons 8-12. Two gay guys competed in seasons 8 and 9, and there's been at least one gay guy in every season since the first All Stars; moreover, at least two LGBTQ-identified men and women were cast in seasons 8, 9, 11, and 12. My hope is that, once again, they allow America to vote and America votes Kevin and me back into the house, so the 2-gays-in-one-season argument becomes a moot point.

Am I a wealth of BB knowledge or what? LOL.

No worries, you made sense. But poll results are just as quantitative, really. One can argue that poll results can be skewed because of the same people voting over and over again (the polarized data you referred to), but there are also tons of bots that follow people on Twitter that aren't real. So in the end, it all washes out the same.

The bottom line is that the producers will put whoever they want in the house, for any reason they like. Boogie and Howie were both selected to go into the house because Will and Janelle both refused to do the show if their friends weren't in there with them. Nothing's totally quantitative or fair where AS selections are concerned.

The reason there were two gay guys in those two seasons was solely because of the twists. One pair were exes and the other pair were supposed to be soulmates. They wouldn't have cast more than 1 if there wasn't a twist, and I'm tired of that. I do think they've made better strides in casting lesbian/bi women the last few years, but I still think they can do better.

And your knowledge is pretty good for a HG, I'll give ya that.

@JwHo --> LOL. As a viewer, I LOVED Ronnie. He kept things interesting. Russ' bullying of Ronnie was epic and classic BB. And Ronnie's "And scene!" was one of the funniest (but not intentionally funny), strangest moments in BB history. Oh, and Ronnie coming out in Star Wars drag!?!? More please! LOL.

Can we talk Real Housewives of Beverly Hills? Is Kim really on drugs? That's been a debate here and she really seems goofy.

That's why numbers are triangulated or compared. Nobody ever looks at one number. Ratings (which aren't the result of repetitive or bot voting) are placed against other indicators. Finally, I still don't totally buy your argument about gay characters. In season 9, including one gay men necessarily meant casting a second. But they didn't have to cast two gay guys in season 8. Not everyone in the house was directly implicated by the twist. I think Robyn and production have done a fantastic job casting a range of gay men.

While I was in the shower, I thought of a perfect example that proves my point. Going into AS1, Erika wasn't on anyone's casting radar, except for production's. People in fan forums didn't passionately love or hate her. But Erika was one of the four women America voted back into the house. Why? Because player popularity and America's vote aren't determined by the outliers (e.g., people who passionately love or hate); America's vote is determined by like for players, not love or hate.

BTW, thanks for having this discussion with me. I LOVE talking game; and casting is definitely part of the game. :-)

Enzo/Hayden/Lane ( One out of these three. I assume it would be Lane if Britney was there)

I would love for Kristen and Annie to be among the people asked back for another All-Stars.

Natalie from season 11 is one person that drove me bonkers having to watch her on the live feeds. The way she ate Red Vines, dragging her slippers across the floor, and the list goes on. She drove me crazy.

However, she has been MIA for the most part post BB. So I want to listen to her chat with Superpass coming up.

BB9: You really think they would've cast one gay man and then paired him with a straight man or a woman and said "Here's your soulmate!"?? The backlash, wow. No, if they were going to include one, they HAD to include a second one. It was just by a fluke that Neil didn't stay in the house and they paired Josh with Sharon.

BB8: You kindof proved my point, though. If Joe or Dustin hadn't have been part of the twist, no way would two gay men have been in the house together. And I say this solely based on looking at the casts of the previous 7 seasons, 6 of which were cast by Robyn (well, 5, not including All-Stars) . Yes, her RANGE of gay men that she's cast has been fantastic, but I'm talking about the sheer number that are in any single cast.

Don't get me wrong, for every bad casting Robyn does, there are two HGs that are phenomenal, but at that point in the history of the game - BB8 - there's no reason to think she would have cast 2 gay men that weren't essential to the twist. And yeah, they didn't have to be part of the twist, but they were already reaching with Carol and Jessica. If they were the 3rd best "enemy" pairing they could find, BB was desperate for 2 people who passed all the tests and wanted to be on the show that could fill an "enemy" role. Jessica was a fun casting, but Carol was one of the biggest duds in BB history, so they were obviously reaching.

But discussing past casting decisions really gets us nowhere. Of course there's room for improvement where casting is involved. You can say that for every reality show that's ever aired. There are good cast members and bad cast members on every show, it's just how it is.

We agree about season 9. Season 8, I think it's just the opposite; you're proving MY point. LOL. My point is that they didn't have to make gays part of the twist. They were included in the twist because, in casting, Dustin and Joe were two of the BEST characters out of all the people who were being considered. Casting and production care about interesting characters and ratings more than they care about only casting one gay person per season. Trust me. I've been through the process. I'm speaking from an informed spot. Promise. ;-)

Yeah, I always found it hilarious that BB12 HGs thought Jeff was the only popular one. Silly, silly HGs. But yeah, both will be asked, but Jordan wouldn't want to do it at all. Well, she might go if Jeff were with her and she had no school that summer. But you know, if Jeff has something better lined up, he'd very easily pass on AS2, too. I just don't see him wanting to fall back into reality tv (competitively) if he can help it.

I think both Jeff/Jordan are a shoe in to be asked back for AS, but I sadly think only one of them will return and it will be Jeff........They are both so popular despite what most HG on season 12 thought, that only Jeff was popular......

I know, I would shake my head at them thinking that......Yeah, I agree if Jeff has something else lined up I doubt he would want to do AS either......

For the record, I LOVED Jordan. In fact, when they visited us this summer, I was more excited to see Jordan than Jeff; but I was thrilled to see both of them. I wanted Kev to win season 11 but was totally in Jordan's corner, too. It always surprised me that Kev didn't gravitate to Jeff and Jordan.

@Hope: Surprisingly, Jessie was one of the first former HGs to reach out to me after the finale. I wouldn't mind seeing Jessie in the house again, as long as I was in it and could look at his muscles. Ugh. I'm such a cliche. LOL.

Just for throwing that out there in the universe I hope he wins the first HOH and evicts you. lol!

Casting and production care about interesting characters and ratings more than they care about only casting one gay person per season. Trust me. I've been through the process. I'm speaking from an informed spot. Promise. ;-)

I never thought it was a case of them casting 1 gay person and then feeling like they've filled their quota so they don't look any further. If that was true, then Lydia, Michele, and Annie may never have been cast.

But how about this, until they put two gay men in the same house without one or both of them being connected to the twist of the season, I'm going to continue to cast a bitchy eye on the casting process. Because you can't convince me that in all these years, they've never found two gay men that would be entertaining houseguests in the same season (again, without the prompting of a twist, our disagreement of BB8 casting notwithstanding). If they ever prove me wrong, I'll be happy to eat crow.

BTW, you teach at my alma mater. Go Beach! Wink

Kevin liked Jordan a lot, but he didn't seem to like Jeff. I was surprised he didn't seem to like Jeff more. I like Kevin and I hope he makes All Stars.
