LONDON — Prince William is engaged to long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton, spokesmen for the monarchy announced Tuesday. The pair will marry in the spring or summer of 2011, a statement from Clarence House, the prince's official residence, said. The prince, second in line to the throne, proposed during an October vacation to Kenya, it added.
"Prince William has informed The Queen and other close members of his family," the statement said. "Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton's father." The couple are both 28 and met more than eight years ago while both were students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

| I always like to read the BBC articles too.
Royal wedding: Is Kate Middleton the new media darling?

| I'm exctied about this! Part of the reason is that they are predicting that the wedding could be as big as Diana's, and part of the reason is that these two are obviously very much in love. That seems to be somewhat of a rarity in royal marriages.

| Well thank goodness William was not told to find a suitable bride with "royal blood." He was able to choose someone he loved rather than someone the palace found "suitable." _________________ ![]() |

I'm glad things have changed. Poor Charles always loved Camilla and should have married her in the first place. A lot of heartache could have been avoided. |

| I am glad they are finally engaged so all the speculation is over. I swear the British press was going crazy the last few years trying to figure out and place together a timeline. I don't know how many "they are getting engaged soon" stories I have read.
I am happy for them. Everything I have read over the years has described a young couple very much in love. I think William was understandably cautious because of what happened with his parents and took the right steps to ensure the relationship was solid. Kate seems to be very classy and impressive in her own right. |

| I love that ring.
I remember not liking Diana's dress. Diana, however, was in total control of what she chose to wear. She worked with the designer of the dress so it was her decision. Looking at the dress today, it does seem conservative. However, it didn't strike me that way at the time. Times have changed and wedding dresses today definitely show more skin than even a decade ago. _________________ ![]() |

I know!!!!! I'm so pathetic, but I keep getting a little choked up!
Blondie- i was alive (I think I was 17) when Charles married Diana. The dress was...weird, to say the least- but she looked amazing- like a big, beautiful parade float! The dress was pretty ick- and almost looked like it was made out of paper- but for some reason she was just breathtaking. |

| This is so exciting. I love Royal weddings! Poor Kate, I do hope she doesn't have to go through all the British press crap that Diana had to, have they learned their lesson yet......probably not.
I watched Charles and Diana's wedding live and was amazed by the dress. The train went on forever. Looking at pictures of the dress now I'm not that crazy about it, but on the day of the wedding I thought it was beautiful.
I had forgotten how beautiful Diana's ring is. Spring or summer of next year, not that far away, we'll have lots to talk about! |

OMG, I could barely hear them over all the camera's snapping away, and the camera flashes made them look like they were in a disco bar with a strobe light! |

| I watched their first sit-down interview earlier and it was interesting to see how nervous Kate seemed to be. She was very articulate, but also kind of overwhelmed at finally being together in front of the cameras.

ETA: Sorry I deleted my post after I saw the link to the interview was already posted. I believe it is the same one. It is worth watching the whole thing if you have not already. |

Isn't this the first time most have heard Kate speak in public. I read some where that most did not know what her voice even sounded like even though they have been together almost eight years. |

| I found this website that is literally tracking this minute by minute. It's a pretty good read, it talks about what her dress might look like, and also includes reactions from family members and foreign press:

| I'm so thrilled for them both. William is such a handsome young man and has so many of his Mom's qualities not to mention he looks so much like her. Kate is stunning, I think she will handle the media attention a lot better than Diana was able to.
I have mixed feelings about William giving Kate Diana's engagement ring, so it's best I keep those thoughts to myself.
I remember setting my alarm to some ridiculous time to watch Diana & Charles marry. I remember thinking how in the world did she manage to fit that dress and it's train into that small carriage she was riding in. When she stepped out of the carriage, you could see just what a wrinkled mess it was. Although the dress was one that I would never considered wearing, I thought she looked stunning. It was also 1981, skin was not shown much back then, especially for the future Queen of England.
I'm looking forward to following these two on their journey these next several months and to once again set that alarm.

| I love William. He is so much like Diana. When I read what the ring looked like, I thought, that sounds like Diana's ring.
William and Kate have been together for a long time, so I hope they have worked out any kinks and can have a wonderful life together. Maybe it will be a long time before they are under so much scrutiny by the press, unlike Charles & Diana right after they got married.
I hope she will have a more modern dress. Diana's dress looked heavy and hot. I don't see how she wore it. I loved the glass carriage she arrived in that brought her to the cathedral.
I just wonder if Queen Liz will let this wedding go thru. I'm surprised that he is not marrying a royal. It was imperative when Charles married the first time, to marry a royal. It's hard for me to believe old Liz has relaxed her strict requirements for the bride who will one day be Queen. Maybe she's mellowed in her old age.
Anyway, I am very glad for William, and I'm sure Diana would have been very happy and proud of him and the choice he made. |
