We live into such different times now in regards to privacy. I was thinking about that a lot the other day. Everyone carries their cellphones, which most, have cameras... especially the young people. One wrong move, and it could very likely be posted on the internet the next day. Imagine, being at a party, back in high school for example knowing that your mother, boyfriend or whatever could see exactly what you were doing the next day! That's kind of good actually! If the weed doesn't make them paranoid the cell phones will. HA!

The bottom line for me is what applies to the rest of us applies to him - he makes his choices, he deals with the consequences of them. If he ends up getting banned from sports for five years because of this, then that is the price he pays. Much like Witty expressed, it's kinda of hard to have it both ways - if he accepts millions and millions of dollars in endorsements to be put on an elite athlete public pedestal, he is accepting his role as a public figure, and whether he likes it or not, role model. If he wants to make choices that don't serve his public image very well, then he can't accept the big money for that public image. My biggest concern, being the parent of three teenage athletes, is that kids might see this and his DWI as 'cool' in a way and more 'acceptable' to them since Michael Phelps, Olympic mega-star, is doing it (not saying my teenagers think this, btw). If it leads even one kid down the path of destruction as a result, it troubles me - if it's drinking and marijuana today, what might it be for them tomorrow?

OK, first of all, it is the choice of his endorsers to keep him or not right? If the mistake makes him loose endorsements, then that will be his consequence. It does show that you can be an Olympic Gold Medalist for swimming of all things and take an occasional bong hit. Some one will have to tell me more about the DWI. That could alter my opinion.

I don't find anything wrong with occasional marijuana use, so I am probably more liberally minded than most in this regard. I don't like pot, so I don't smoke it, but a good majority of the doctors I worked with in Miami smoked weed at home with their spouses etc. I think teenagers should avoid it because their brains are still developing. But look at how much worse alcohol and cigarettes are for you! Why are those legal?

He deserves some kudos for winning all those Gold Medals! I find that very inspirational, especially hearing that he did smoke weed. Gosh, I remember my brother smoking weed while preparing for the BAR exam and he passed it the first time around.

I have also heard that Michael Phelps suffers from a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome (Autism).. this probably comes into play as well.

Sorry for the rant. I really do enjoy the debate, how I don't sound like I am arguing.

If he signed contracts with Moral clauses and he loses those endorsements then that is what it is. It is a consequence for his actions. Nothing wrong with it, we all should have to face the consequences of our behavior.

The only problem I have is that it is illegal. So that would be something that he will have to deal with. If it wasnt illegal I wouldnt really give it a second thought as I wouldnt if he was seen doing beer bongs..

I do however get disgusted with the justice system and how it treats those who have money and fame compared to a poor no body who would get time in jail or a huge fine for such a thing.

From what I've read so far, all the sponsors are standing behind him with the possible exception of Kellogg's. They haven't issued a statement yet.
