Oh that is a good idea.

Memphis - I sent Ricardo to get batteries and ice. I hope he find them. Can't we just go to a hotel?

If you have a gas stove, then all you will need is a match to lite it. If your stove is electric, well then yes, you're out of luck.

Moody, if you want to go to a hotel, then I would suggest you go early this evening. You don't want to be traveling on the roads with the risk of trees falling. Good luck to Riccardo regarding the batteries, I went to 5 stores yesterday, not one D battery on any of the shelves. We're OK though, I have a few flashlights that are working, I just don't know when their batteries will die.

My husband just informed me that he wants to stay with the house and that for me and dogs to go to Mom's. I'm freaking out arguing with him. No way is he staying here! He's afraid of flooding in the basement, like we can do anything about it anyway. If it floods, it floods, it's better than risking being slammed by one of these damn trees. He knows how I am and that I'm a wreck over this and he has to push my damn buttons at the 11th hour ARRRG

You can go to a hotel if you can find one. I did that one year (turned out the storm was not as big as predicted so it was not even necessary) and it was fun. I remember all of the guests got together in a big room to listen to the coverage of the storm etc.

Like I mentioned in another post, take advantage of the time with your kids and please stay safe.

Good point about driving Jack'd. At some point they would not even let us drive. There was a curfew and nobody could go out. If you want to go anywhere do it while you still can.

You can if you go now - however, they will make people come downstairs if it is bad but they will have a generator for some power and will have food. Call and see if anyone will take you - look for a full service hotel, best chance for generators and food service. keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Oh no! I hope he goes with you - there is nothing he can do to prevent it. The trees in your area are already at risk, or so they are reporting. Keeping good thoughts!

The only positive about trees by me is that SO many trees fell during those weird ass tornados we had last September, so there aren't as many around the area.

Con Ed says it may have to cut power to some of the low-lying areas if we get a really bad storm surges because of the salt-water. I'm not in any of those area's so I hope my electric stays on.

Stay safe everyone!

I read somewhere that Con Ed is hoping that by shutting those areas off they can keep everyone else on the grid. I hope you keep power too!

Updated: Aug 28, 2011, 8:00 a.m. ET

The first effects of Hurricane Irene are being felt across the Northeast on Sunday morning. The center of Irene will pass right over New York City by mid-late morning, driving storm surge into the south shore of Long Island, parts of New York Harbor, and the west end of Long Island Sound.

City of Hoboken released this:
Hoboken, NJ - Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Residents are very strongly urged to completely stay off streets. Live electrical wires are down in flooded areas and electrocution is possible. Do not walk your dogs.

Especially dangerous conditions exist along the waterfront, where the high tide and storm surge may cause the Hudson River to rise over the walkway.

According to PSE&G, an estimated 8,800 Hoboken residents will soon lose power. We urge residents to charge phones, fill bathtub, sinks, and pots with water. Turn refrigerators to the coldest setting and keep them closed.

Phone lines to the Fire Department are down.

www.cnn.com

[Update 8 a.m. Sunday] CNN's Soledad O'Brien and Senior Producer Rose Arce report the Hudson River has overflowed its banks in lower Manhattan with flooding occurring as far as a block inland in the city's meat packing district.

[Update 8:34 a.m. Sunday] The Hudson River is causing some flooding in the West Village, CNN's Phil Han reported. Han said part of 10th Avenue has been blocked off and two cars just got stuck in the water.

Manhattan has power. The eye is over the city so it is very bright.

Trees and powerlines down outside of city. The backside is getting ready to come through so the water should start to recede.

All we have is some broken tree branches so things are all good here.
