PostSubject: Hurricane Irene   August 24th 2011, 5:44 pm

From the Weather Channel:

Updated: August 24, 2011 2:30 pm ET

"It's not every day you see a hurricane forecast cone pointed into the Northeast.

In fact, the concern among meteorologists is high. National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read: "We are very concerned with what's going to happen in New England. The benchmark is the 1938 hurricane. I am very concerned with what will happen there."

The potential is real for the strongest hurricane hit on the Northeast in at least a couple decades this weekend!"

PostSubject: Re: Hurricane Irene   August 24th 2011, 5:48 pm

Updates from The Weather Channel:

We've added an "EXTREME" threat level category from eastern North Carolina to southern New England. According to Hurricane Expert, Dr. Rick Knabb and Sr. Meteorologist, Stu Ostro, "this is a particularly threatening situation and it's best for people to be on alert."

Computer models are currently trending toward a forecast solution of rare potency for portions of the Northeast.

Irene has the potential to be a serious and multi-hazard threat for the major metropolitan areas of the Northeast along and east of the I-95 corridor. This includes Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston. This hurricane has the potential to produce flooding rains, high winds, downed trees (on houses, cars, power lines) and widespread power outages. Significant impacts along the immediate coast include high waves, surge and beach erosion. The severity of the impacts will be determined by Irene's exact path and intensity, which remain uncertain at this time.

For North Carolina, odds are increasing that the main impact will be confined to the Outer Banks and elsewhere in extreme eastern NC

Timing: Irene will make its closest approach to the Carolinas late Friday night through Saturday. Northeast U.S. impacts would be this weekend into early Monday of next week.

We remain several days away from Irene's direct impacts along the US East Coast and critical uncertainties remain. Stay tuned to The Weather Channel and right here on www.weather.com for further updates.

Well that isn't good. But I am not convinced yet. The last time the area got all panicked about a storm like this, it was the lamest storm ever.

I am nervous because we are on the water (well, a two minute walk to the dock).
I am also scared because we have SOOOOOOOOO many oak and maple trees in our yard and on our road.

Here is a webcam from an island in the Bahamas. The main part of the storm has not arrived in this spot, yet.

This is going to be one for the record books, I fear.

They are awful! And it can not only knock out power but infiltrate the water system so you have no drinking or cooking water.

When you live in Florida you learn to be hurricane ready and how to hunker down! Make sure you have lots of bottled water, canned goods, batteries, cash (it was impossible to get cash after the last few hurricanes), have all of your insurance docs handy and be sure to fill your cars with gas. We also got one of those mini battery tvs which was really helpful and of course a radio. We had no power for about 2 weeks after hurricane Charley. I learned the hard way. Stay safe!

We had to leave our house which was a good thing because when we got home there were trees down everywhere, including one that had fallen on our roof/house. They say the best place to be is in a room with no windows. What is really crazy is that there were no traffic lights (no power) and trees and debris all over the roads. Driving was scary.

One of the things that FEMA use to encourage people to do when Jon was working for them was to gather all important documents and put them in ziploc baggies, keep all your supplies in a rubbermaid container that is easy to grab in case of evacuation, it also helps keep things protected from water. Also gas is very important, it will run out and people will get stranded so keep your cars full at all times.

I had the opportunity (if you can call it that) to tour several different disaster zones (flood, tornadoes, ice storms, and hurricanes) and the devastation in Galveston after Hurricane Ike is what sticks out to me the very most out of all the places I have seen, it was unreal and I know it wasn't even as bad as some can be. Stay safe everybody.

I would definitely be stocking up on bottled water, batteries, battery powered radios, and food that doesn't have to be prepared. Board up your windows if the winds are gonna be high and secure anything that's outside so they don't become flying projectiles during the storm.

My niece is in Charleston SC and she said it's now supposed to miss them. My parents are also supposed to head to Myrtle Beach for a week starting on Sat. Not sure how that's gonna work out for them.

NYC is a sitting duck for storm surges. I hope they don't get lots of flooding. Who knows about the buildings though. I'm sure they weren't built with hurricanes in mind like they are in Florida.

Stay safe everyone and evacuate if you are told to!!!

Essential Items
(from TWC)
During a hurricane, and possibly for days or even weeks afterward, electricity and other utilities might not be available. Debris and/or water might block the roads, preventing vehicles from getting in our out of your neighborhood. Help might not reach you for days after the hurricane, so you’ll need to be completely self-sufficient during that period.

Here are some of the most critical supplies to have on hand, well before a hurricane threatens:

At least a 3-day and preferably a 7-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day)
Non-perishable food
Formula, diapers, and other baby supplies
Manual can opener
First aid kit
Prescription and non-prescription medicines
Toiletries
Cell phones and battery-powered cell phone chargers
Battery-powered radios and flashlights
Plenty of batteries
Extra cash
Blankets, sleeping bags, books, and games (especially if evacuating)

By MITCH WEISS 08/25/11 05:52 PM ET

......All eyes were on Irene's projected path, which showed it bringing misery to every city along the I-95 corridor, including Washington, New York and Boston. The former chief of the National Hurricane Center called it one of his three worst possible situations.

"One of my greatest nightmares was having a major hurricane go up the whole Northeast Coast," Max Mayfield, the center's retired director, told The Associated Press.

He said the damage will probably climb into billions of dollars: "This is going to have an impact on the United States economy."

It is a massive storm, with tropical-force winds extending almost twice as far as normal, about the same size as Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005.

"It's not going to be a Katrina, but it's serious," said MIT meteorology professor Kerry Emanuel. "People have to take it seriously."

The governors of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York and New Jersey declared emergencies to free up resources, and authorities all the way to New England urged residents in low-lying areas to gather supplies and learn the way to a safe location. ............

Well, I'm streaming the live CBC coverage right now and I guess they're expecting the storm surge to be high since it's a new moon. They mentioned probable flooding in many east coast areas including New York but nothing too definitive until they're more sure about where actual landfall will take place. It all sounds scary as Hell.

I think you should be concerned. Dr. Forbes doesn't get excited easily. She needs to prepare for no power. And that means food, drink, flashlights batteries, a wind up charger for the cell phone would be nice and CASH, some store will open with no power but obvi can only take cash and there is no way to get any.

I can't watch the news anymore, I'm scared shitless!

I have a bridal shower on Sat. late afternoon. My husband and I decided that when I get home, we will head to my Mom's house for the night. I have a bunch of huge Oak trees surrounding my house and if one of them come down, we are toast. We'll be taking both cars too. This way, I can keep an eye on her too in case we lose electricity.

They are already started evacuating Long Beach Island and starting at 8 am tomorrow, no cars are allowed to cross over the bridge into Seaside.
