An Indiana woman in the middle of a messy divorce decided to resort to social media subterfuge to gather evidence against her soon-to-be ex-husband, reports the Smoking Gun. Angela Voelkert, 29, created a fake Facebook profile, adopting the persona of Jessica Studebaker, a 17-year-old girl who likes Elvis and lots of dark eye make-up. She then had the StudeFaker account friend her husband, David Voelkert, 38, who has just 152 friends himself.

StudeFaker struck up a rapport with him via private Facebook message. Angela Voelkert wisely recruited a friend to compose the Facebook messages for fear that her hubby would recognize her writing style. David Voelkert bared all to his new nubile friend, telling her about his divorce and about how he had sold his security alarm business with plans to skip town with his kids. He also decided to let her in on the secret that he was stalking his wife:

In a May 31 Facebook message, Voelkert told “Studebaker” that he had secretly installed a GPS tracker in his wife’s van and was using the device to monitor her movements. He “went on to discuss what kind of trouble that they could get in for doing this,” and asked the teenager to “delete the message so there is no trace of talking about it,” [FBI agent] Dane reported.

I would almost believe it, but what he is being arrested for is the GPS, not the death threat. So, if he told the fake teen that he knew it was illegal and did it anyway, then the story about him knowing doesn't sound plausible.

UPDATE: It seems David has been released from custody after proving he knew the profile was Voelkert, reports the Smoking Gun.

To support this contention, Voelkert provided FBI agents with a May 25 notarized affidavit in which he describes receiving a friend request from “Jessica Studebaker,” whom he suspected was his ex-wife. “I am lying to this person,” he stated, “to gain positive proof that it is indeed my ex-wife trying to again tamper in my life.” He added, “In no way do I have plans to leave with my children or do any harm to Angela Dawn Voelkert or anyone else.”

The allegedly incriminating Facebook messages sent by Voelkert came on May 31, six days after his sworn affidavit was notarized. Voelkert kept one copy of the affidavit, and gave a relative a second copy for safekeeping.

I don't know if it is this article, but one I read said that it wasn't a GPS at all. It was a car alarm.
